Thanks for your comment. Believe it or not, I didn’t smooth the charcoal after it was applied. The technique I used was to move a very sharp stick of charcoal in very small, random circles, transferring charcoal to paper “a molecule at a time”. This approach is very time consuming, but it does allow a high level of control and access to the entire value scale from the blackest of blacks to the whitest of whites. For this technique, you want to use hard vine charcoal. Here’s a link to a page that shows the fine point on the charcoal. I couldn’t find an article on the technique, but if I do I will post it here in another comment.
